What Are the Health Effects of Green Banana Flour?
Green banana flour is a unique functional food made by harvesting bananas while they are still green and unripe, then drying and milling them into flour. What makes it particularly valuable is its naturally high content of resistant starch, dietary fibre, antioxidant phenolic compounds, and minerals such as potassium and magnesium. These nutritional components have attracted increasing attention for their potential role in supporting gut and metabolic health.
A Prebiotic Feast for Your Gut
The human digestive system cannot fully break down the resistant starch found in green banana flour in the small intestine. Instead, a portion passes through the stomach and small intestine largely undigested and reaches the colon, where it can act as a prebiotic substrate for beneficial gut bacteria.
When these bacteria ferment resistant starch, they produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, propionate and acetate. These fatty acids can serve as an energy source for colon cells and may help support the integrity and normal function of the intestinal barrier.
Clinical research has also suggested that green banana consumption may help support the management of diarrhoea in both children and adults, while potentially contributing to improvements in constipation-related symptoms.
Blood Sugar and Insulin Sensitivity
Compared with rapidly digestible refined flours, green banana flour contains a substantial proportion of carbohydrates in the form of resistant starch. Because resistant starch is not digested into glucose in the small intestine in the same way as conventional starch, it may contribute to a lower post-meal glycaemic response.
Research has explored whether regular consumption of green banana flour may help support blood glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity.
Clinical studies involving individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes have reported improvements in certain markers of glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity following the inclusion of green banana products or resistant starch in the diet. However, the available evidence is still developing, and the magnitude of these effects can vary depending on the product, resistant starch content, dose and study population.
Practical Ways to Use Green Banana Flour
Green banana flour can be easily incorporated into everyday recipes. It is naturally gluten-free, making it a useful ingredient in gluten-free formulations. However, people with coeliac disease should still choose products specifically produced and certified to avoid gluten cross-contamination.
Smoothies and drinks: Green banana flour can be added directly to milk, yoghurt, smoothies or other cold preparations. Using it without intensive heating can help preserve more of its native type 2 resistant starch (RS2).
Baking and cooking: It can also be used in muffins, cakes, cookies, pancakes and gluten-free pasta formulations. Depending on the recipe, green banana flour may replace approximately 15–30% of conventional flour, although the ideal amount will vary according to the desired texture and formulation.
Heating can reduce native RS2 levels. During cooling, however, some gelatinised starch may undergo retrogradation, forming type 3 resistant starch (RS3). For this reason, the resistant starch profile of green banana flour can change considerably depending on how a food is processed, cooked and cooled.
